Signal-free indoor, outdoor and underground navigation for blind and low-vision travellers, used by transit agencies
What it is
A free navigation app that guides blind and low-vision users indoors, outdoors and underground using a proprietary sensor-fusion technique (SmartStep) rather than GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or cellular signal. It uses the phone's accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and barometer, fused roughly 100 times per second, with machine-learning gait analysis to perform continuous dead-reckoning positioning against a pre-built digital venue map, delivering turn-by-turn spoken directions accurate to within about a metre. A separate visual positioning system (Waymap Pro) uses LiDAR and camera imagery for centimetre-level start-point accuracy. Transit agencies including WMATA (Washington DC Metro) have partnered with Waymap to map their stations.
