A power-assist wheel that clips onto a manual wheelchair and reads a push gesture from a wristband to add propulsion
What it is
A motorised drive wheel that attaches beneath a manual wheelchair and is engaged by a light forward push of the hand rims, detected via an accelerometer-based wristband (PushTracker) that recognises the push gesture rather than requiring a separate joystick or switch. Once engaged, the wheel adds propulsion and automatically compensates for terrain — increasing power on carpet, inclines or grass and reducing it on smooth, level ground — so the level of manual effort required stays roughly constant regardless of surface. The wristband also allows braking and steering-assist gestures.
