Ottobock C-Brace

by Ottobock SE & Co. KGaA · DE

Microprocessor-controlled leg brace that lets the knee bend naturally under load instead of staying locked straight

Hardware Also software Orthotic

What it is

A custom-fabricated, sensor-controlled knee-ankle-foot orthosis (a leg brace, not a full exoskeleton) for people with weakness or partial paralysis of one leg. Sensors read joint angle and load roughly 50 times per second and continuously adjust hydraulic resistance at the knee, allowing controlled flexion under body weight — something a conventional locked-knee brace cannot do. This lets the wearer walk on slopes and uneven ground, descend stairs step-over-step rather than one-at-a-time, and recover from a stumble by resisting a sudden buckle, all while worn under normal clothing.

Who this helps, and how

Replaces a rigid locked-knee brace with one that bends naturally, restoring near-normal gait on stairs, slopes and uneven ground

Purpose-built — Designed as assistive technology Mobility & Dexterity Reduced reach, strength or stamina Paralysis & spinal cord injury
