What it is
Instagram is a free photo- and video-sharing social media app from Meta, available on iOS, Android and the web, used to post, browse and interact with images, short videos (Reels) and Stories. When a user posts a photo without adding their own written alt text, Instagram automatically generates a short spoken image description using a server-side computer vision model, which screen readers such as VoiceOver and TalkBack announce when a user's screen-reader focus lands on that image. Users can also write and edit their own alt text on photos they post, which takes precedence over the automatic description.
